Leadership is often described in terms of vision, strategy, and decision-making. Those elements matter. But over time, I’ve come to understand leadership as less about control and more about presence.

Music has shaped that understanding for me.

In music, leadership is rarely about dominance. It’s about listening. About sensing timing, pace, and readiness. It’s knowing when to lead, when to follow, and when to hold steady so others can step forward. Musical experiences unfold through relationship, not force.

I’ve seen these same dynamics play out in teams, organizations, classrooms, and families.

When music is held with care, repetition creates safety. Shared structure invites participation. Presence allows people to take risks and contribute their own voice. When those elements are in place, connection deepens and creativity emerges. When they aren’t, engagement fades.

I’ve learned that effective leadership works in much the same way. People don’t need constant direction. They need leaders who are paying attention. Leaders who are steady, responsive, and willing to stay present long enough for trust to grow.

Music also reminds us that leadership is embodied. It lives not just in words, but in tone, pacing, and presence. People are constantly reading cues, often unconsciously, to determine whether it is safe to speak, try, or stretch. Leadership is felt before it is understood.
