This a great place to save your responses. It can be helpful with facilitating future sessions as well as sharing information with colleagues and families.

With Sprouting Melodies 1, the words that Meredith uses to describe the experience are bonding, touch, gentle, slower pace, cuddling, calm affect, joy, swaying, and I am sure much more. The fact that one can include a 0-month old means the adaptability needs to be there.

One might tell parents about the adaptability of music and demonstrate that. We also want them to bond and build connections with their caregivers; it would be helpful to affirm their bonding within the group. Within Sprouting Melodies 1, there are two different levels that one can advance to (awareness -> trust) and/or to have both levels within a group. Educating parents on this can be helpful, informative, and build their trust as well for what Sprouting Melodies can provide. Showing that holding their babies 12-18 inches is exactly the right course of action. One might also tell parents about the melodies that babies are drawn to – the upward higher melodies. Instruments can be explored at this age, as well!

A plan to use for a SM 1 session might be: Hello, instrument exploration, “Hold On Tight!” (movement song), “I See Colors” movement song, Goodbye

      1. Tell the parents that the timbre of their voice is very important for their baby!
      2. That space between your and your baby (12-18 inches) is important for bonding, leaning in and making sure that you are close enough that they can see you!
      3. When using a scarf, do movements slowly so the baby can keep up and follow along with you.
      4. Body percussion and singing are done more quietly because it is more about the movement and the gesture, not as much for the sound!
      5. Babies respond well to those glissandos and higher pitched sounds in a music experience.

It’s okay to Slow down and just focus on being present with your baby at whatever musical response they are doing that day.
The timber of your voice is most important for your baby.
Some babies are ready for (skill) and some aren’t, and that’s okay too.
Try to move scarves slowly so that your baby can follow the movement.
12-18 inches is a good distance so that your baby can see you and bond.
Babies are attracted to higher melodies.

Good morning, Hold on Tight, I like this song, Pick your hands up high, just like me, Goodbye

Five words: gentle, fun, bonding, consistent, predictable

Session: hello, Are You Ready for Music with body percussion, Trot Old Joe (lap ride song), I Like This Song with maracas, I Can Move Around (changing lyrics to reflect movement), Time to Go (cool down song), Goodbye

      Sentences
      – Make sure movements are close enough so baby can see and slow enough so baby can track visually
      – We want to minimize the startle reflex so we will fill in space between songs with music
      – Remember: it is your child’s choice to look or not look at the music and we need to honor that choice
      – Children learn through repetition, so we will sing this 3 more times
      – Bonding creates trust and helps create healthy relationships later in life
