5 words to describe the music experiences in Sprouting Melodies 2.
Trust
Exciting
Surprises
Playful
Connection5 Sentences: Children in SM 2 are likely to take the initiative of reaching out to touch instruments in their environment. Children at this developmental level will also want to turn outward to see other people in the group, rather than just facing their caregiver like in SM 1. “Surprises” in the music, such as a sudden stop, will get children’s attention and may even be humorous to them. You may see your child start to move rhythmically along to the music by bouncing, clapping, or rocking. They are also likely to imitate the rhythmic actions of adults who are moving along to the music.
Gathering/instrument exploration song: In my Little Hand
Hello Song
Bonding- Wiggly Jiggly Car
Songs about Me- All of this is Me
Movement song- I Can Move Around, In The Jungle Adaptation

5 words to describe Sprouting Melodies 2: Playful, Exploration, Energy, Surprise, Spontaneous
5 things to say to parents:
It’s okay for your little ones to explore the space around them, I invite you to follow them as they explore! 2) It’s completely normal for your child to keep shaking after we stop, it takes their brain a bit longer to process what is happening! 3) If you see that your child is not 100% attentive the whole time, that is completely normal. 45 minutes if a long time for them to be fully engaged. 4) If your child appears to just be listening and standing there watching, they are still taking in the musical experience. 5) Feel free to join us in singing when you feel comfortable. It’s great for your child to hear me sing, but it’s more impactful if they hear you singing along too.Session Plan:
Gathering/Greeting song: It’s Time to Make Some Music (gathering) into Hello Everybody (greeting)
Bonding Song: Wiggly, Jiggly Car
Songs about Me: All of This is Me
Instrument Song: Playing in a Band
Movement Song: March With My Baby
Goodbye: Music Time is Done

In every training I always share the STAR Institute in Colorado which is an organization that was founded by an occupational therapist who trained under the OT that discovered sensory processing. Their website and services are great. They now are offering trainings for non-OT’s and I think the information on regulation and sensory processing. I have found their research to be very useful in utilizing music to provide the right stimulation and to help with overall regulation and processing.
Here is their website:

5 Words: Vocal, playful, exploratory, energetic, spontaneous,
Try facing and engaging your child when they’re making music, notice their response now face other group members and notice your child’s response. Expect your child to intermittently engage and disengage in active music making, and that is totally OK. It’s always helpful to play and sing along so you can act as a model for you child and other children in the group. Allow for extra time for your child to put away/take an instrument. The clean up song and modeling through other children will help facilitate those transfers without forcing it and potentially upsetting the child.
Gathering: Sit down with ME
Greeting: Hello
Bonding: Wiggly, Jiggly, Car
Song about Me: All of this is Me
Movement: Can you Follow Me
