I had a music group today with students ages 4-8 who are severely multiply impaired (SXI). One little guy was experiencing his first day at my school. He had had a long tearful first day (the group was at 1:30)and the staff that attended the group said they weren’t sure of his functioning level as his intereaction with anyone or anything had been nill. Through playing the drum and I was able to engage him as we obsereved him turn toward the music and reach for the drum. A short time later he became agitated but choose to look and watch me shake a tiny shaker while I was singing and then reach for the shaker and shake it. It was great that I could quickly mentally refer to the stages and give the staff instant feedback as well as a baseline!
