Sprouting Melodies 3: Active, Deliberate, Playful, Joy, Exploration

Session Plan: 1. Hello/Greeting Song 2. Gathering Song. Something with a strong rhythm like “Sit Down With Me”. 3. Bonding Song. Moving between bonding songs with the caregiver to bonding songs with other children in the group. “My Brand New Friend” Shared props and instruments to facilitate this. 4. Songs about me. Lots of body part recognition songs. Play with the tempo. 5. Instrument Songs. Introduction of two handed instruments. Lots of opportunity for improvisation to support their exploration of a variety of instruments. 6. Movement Songs like “Will you Come” 7. Goodbye Song.

Making sure that I leave lots of opportunities for the children to make musical choices. Give them more “control” and ownership of the music.

Family Sprouts: Sharing, Connection, Teamwork, Joy, Family

Session Plan: 1. Hello Song 2. Bonding Song like “Row it Faster”. 3. Songs about Me. “All of this is Me” 4. Instrument Songs. Provide a wide variety of instruments to suit the many developmental levels in the room. Leave improvisation opportunities for older children. Instruments create an opportunity for joint play between siblings. 5. Movement Songs. Being aware that there are different levels of movement ability in the room. Choose songs with some sitting, standing and walking sections. Create opportunities for the younger child to watch the older ones demonstrate jumping, marching etc. Encourage parents to pick up littlest ones and move them around as well. 6. Goodbye song

-Sprouting Melodies 3: jumping, opportunities for child contribution, peer interaction, moving away from and back to parent, reciprocal play

-Family Sprouts: flexibility within structure, leadership (in regards to the older child), everyone together, learning from each other, busy

-Sprouting Melodies 3 Session: 1.) Hello/Gathering – Using “Hello Everybody” the group would be encouraged to sing each child’s name to encourage the children to acknowledge their peers as they’re entering into more peer interaction during this stage. 2.) Body Percussion – The children would be allowed to sit or stand where they’re most comfortable, whether that’s in mom or dad’s lap or across the room, and using an original song I developed called, “I Really Like to Move Around,” the children and adults would clap, stomp, pat their knees, etc. in each verse. 3.) Lap Ride/Tickles – I really liked Beth’s “Swimming Together” song, and I would utilize that at this time. 4.) Instrument Play – Beth’s “You Play a Little” song is awesome, and I would use this with drums as we saw in the video to encourage peer interaction as well as interaction with parents. 5.) Gross Motor Movement- I would use Beth’s excellent song “Will You Come?” to give the child an opportunity to pull back “in” a little and to jump and move. 6.) Cool Down – I would encourage the children and adults to sing “Old MacDonald.” During each verse, I might hold up a visual like a picture or a stuffed animal to enhance learning as well as to keep the group engaged. 7.) Goodbye – As I have done with the previous groups, I will continue to utilize my original song, “It’s Time to Say Goodbye” to provide some consistency and security.

-Family Sprouts Session: 1.) Hello/Gathering –I would use Beth’s song “Come and Join the Circle” since I would imagine that it may be a little overwhelming for children to enter this environment, and the language used in the song can really bring everyone together as a group right away. 2.) Lap Ride/Tickles – I would use Beth’s song “Row it Faster” since I think this song really lends itself well for the real little ones as well as the older ones, especially when the elements of surprise are used. 3.) Instrument Play –I would have the older children pick out at least one maraca for themselves and one for their sibling and take a maraca back to their younger sibling. The group would sing Beth’s song “In My Little Hand,” and I would ask the older children to suggest which body part they’d like to shake around next. 4.) Gross Motor Movement –I would have the older children either put their sibling’s maraca away or hold onto it while the group moves to Beth’s song “I Can Move Around.” I would make sure to let parents know it’s alright if their older child moves away from them during this time as they hold and sway their little one. 5.) Cool Down – I would use Beth’s “Just Like Me” song here and have the older children suggest which body part to sing about next. 6.) Goodbye – I really liked Beth’s idea of ending the session with a scarf activity to bring everyone together. I would probably use her song “It’s Time to Say Goodbye” with the scarves as we saw in the video.

I can’t WAIT to use this session format when I run my first official Family Sprouts group in June! 🙂 I’ve already been incorporating songs into groups and individual sessions and it’s been amazing to see the response!

Sprouting Melodies 3: Independency, active, exploring, creative, accepting

Family Sprouts: sharing connections, joyful, individuality – community

As songs from here are on English and not on my language (ok, maybe for someone), firstly I should have to collect or make songs including gathering, greeting, bonding, instruments songs, songs about me, movement songs and goodbye.

      Family Sprouts:

5 words: Bonding, Collaboration, Flowing, Sharing, Understanding

      Session Plan:
Gathering: Sit down with me (I love this one for a transition into the beginning of the session as it gives clear instructions and gets everyone primed and ready)
Hello: Come on, let’s make some music
Bonding songs: Hold on Tight (appropriate for younger and older children as they can partake of the movements to varying degrees – emphasis on the “ohhhh” part can vary according to developmental levels) & Can you see me?
Instrument Songs: I Like This song (I love this song as it leaves the children totally free to determine the complexity of their instrument play on their own)
Movement (can hold onto instruments): Dancing in the Middle & I can move around
Cool Down: The leaves are falling (allows a natural decrease in the energy level and caters more toward the younger ones)
      Goodbye: Music Time Is Over

      Sprouting Melodies 3:

5 words: Engaging, Active, Versatile, Support, Dynamic

      Session Plan:
Instrument Exploration (with plenty of options for instruments that are “2-handed”)
Gathering: Sit Down With Me (the strong rhythm of this one is so enticing for getting attention and getting everyone in sync)
      Hello: Hey, y’all (original song)
Body Percussion: All of This is Me
      Bonding: Swimming Together
Instrument song: You play a little (increasing interactions with others in the group)
      Movement song: Will You Come?
Cool Down: My Brand new Friend (using scarves or other less stimulating objects (i.e. not tambourines, etc.) and to follow up on the inter-play between peers that was touched on during the instrument song)
Transition to Goodbye: Music Time is Over
      Goodbye: So Long! (original song)

Nana, thank you so much for pointing that out. Perhaps there is a way for you to translate these songs into your language or possibly adapt into your language. Also, feel empowered to write your own songs in these categories. We would love to see and hear them! And if anyone else has songs they have written we would love for you to share them with us!

Five Words for SM3: intent, sharing, movement, independence, active

Session Plan- 1) Greeting- Sit Down With Me- I would play with the tempo of the song by starting moderate to gain attention, then speed it up to encourage movement to join the group, then repeat it slowly with deliberate movement to slow things down once everyone joins. 2) Swimming Together- I like the tempo play in this – it is very engaging and, as summer approaches the topic is very appropriate for this time of year. 3) Songs About Me- Where is the Music- I enjoy the language that this gives children and the chant format is a lot of fun! 4) Instrument songs- You Play A Little- this is a nice introduction to sharing and taking turns and the lyrics help facilitate this, then I would use resonator bells to play a 5th/sing How Do You Know When It’s Summertime. 5) Movement- I love the Leaves Go Down song, but since this session plan has more of a summer theme, I would use the Rainbow song with scarves to make swooping shapes and other guided movements. 6) Goodbye- Thank You Very Much

Five Words for FS: Interactive, sharing, variety, collaboration, exciting

Session Plan- 1) Greeting- Hey Everybody- this is an engaging chant/song and a good opportunity for older siblings to encourage their younger siblings to join the circle. 2) Bonding song- Row It Faster 3) Songs About Me- All Of This Is Me- this is such a nice way for siblings to teach each other the movements- it’s a much more exciting melody than the Head and Shoulders song! 4) Instrument Songs- I Like This Song- this really gives the kids freedom to play and express themselves however they want. It’s another opportunity for older siblings to engage with their younger siblings or even other children in the group. 5) Movement- I Can Move Around 6) Goodbye- Thank You Very Much

Five words for SM3: independence, choices, musical, creative and energetic

Session plan for SM3: I would open with Hello, Everybody followed by a gathering song “Gather Round”. I think a bonding song would work next to establish that secure base such as My Brand New Friend (especially since at this age they are playing and learning so much from their peers). For main activities I would utilize “Where is the music” followed by some movement songs such as The Leaves Go Down and Will You Come”. They some instrument songs like You play a little and I like this song followed by a good bye song and Thank you very much!

Five words for Family Sprouts: connecting; learning; sharing; integrating, and FUN!

Session plan for Family Sprouts: This one is a little more tricky since there are so many different developmental levels. I would definitely do a hello song like Hello, Everybody and sing each person’s name. I wold warm everyone up with some movement songs like I Can Move Around and encourage the children to move in their own way… whatever level they are at. I would then do some songs about me like “Can You See Me” and encourage peer to peer interaction or toddler to caregiver interaction. Instrument song like “Dancing in the Middle” or “I like this song” would be great as well as some traditional nursery songs. Last I would bring the energy down with Pick Your Hands Up High followed by the goodbye song.
