ParticipantI am so excited to have had myself & 4 other team members complete this SM training now! We have already been having conversations about our next steps & implementing/offering our first program in January. We are looking into what instruments we need to purchase, what we already have, and how to roll this out realistically in our communities (18 counties) that we serve. We are also talking about little nuggets we’ve all gleaned and incorporate into our daily practice too
ParticipantI’m excited for our team at Healing Rhythms to be a provider of Sprouting Melodies! There are 5 of the 10 of us that have done the training now π I think it is a unique offering that sets us apart from other music programs in the community and is a beautiful extension of what we are already providing the community! Now we just need to make it happen….figure out schedules, advertise, and fill our classes!!
ParticipantHALLY: I agree that highlighting strengths is key! I always take a strengths-based approach in my work and it is so important
ParticipantBuilding immediate trust & rapport through active engagement, eye-contact & meeting them where they are at but also setting firm boundaries and expectations is key from my experiences

ParticipantKIM: I love the perspective that you bring as an intern π And I love your own experience of your mom singing everything regardless of “not being able to sing”

ParticipantLots of great comments here!
I think that in general music therapists focus so much more on total development vs (musical) skills. #1 I think is our ability to be in the moment & meet the children where they are at, we allow them to explore at their own rate and this is a huge perk of SM vs other music curriculums. Of course these kids will learn music skills in the process but that’s not the main focus…it is creative exploration of their body, voice & mind (with their caregiver) through music which also promotes bonding in addition to whole-brain activiation. And yes–as someone already mentioned–we naturally promote SUCCESS & mastery of skills in a non-threatening environment & way through music…afterall music is our tool π

ParticipantSprouting Melodies 3: Active, Strong, Push & Pull, Accepting, Creative
Again I loved all the songs they did for examples with this!
Gathering: Sit Down with Me; Bonding: Swimming Together; Songs About Me; Where is the Music (I love the chant b/c I think sometime sit gets kids/parents engaged quicker especially for those who say they “can’t sing”); Instrument: Music Is the Way (I never would’ve thought about adding resonator bells at this age so thanks for the idea!); Movement: The Leaves are Falling (love the scarves with this); Goodbye: Time to Go

ParticipantFamily Sprouts: JOYFUL (loved that!), busy, cooperation, magical transformation, support
Plan for Family Sprouts: I pretty much loved everything they modeled as examples! Gathering: Come Join the Circle; Bonding: Hold on Tight; Songs about Me: All of This is Me; Instrument: I Like this Song (I personally LOVE the piano/calypso style in this!), Movement: I Can Move Around (I love adding the instruments for the older kids); It’s Time to Say Goodbye
ParticipantSammie: Good example of groups at Ronald McDonald House….I’m wondering what tonight’s group will bring to you for insight to this. But as you mentioned, that is where we can empower them to be leaders/helpers π And that also promotes community & family!
ParticipantKIM: Good suggestions of scaffolding, taking Beth’s examples of adding movements or adapting tempo too.
ParticipantI am honestly so used to running multi-aged & ability groups (after working in a pediatric hospital for 15 years) that it doesn’t even phase me BUT there are definitely challenges! Thinking about how do you meet them in the moment at their appropriate development/age level, supporting them for autonomy & independence yet helping them meet & thrive in their developmental milestones can be challenging. I do find that empowering the older children to be leaders or in this case “helpers” with sibs could be quite effective. I think if anyone is equipped to do this, a music therapist is though because of our training & expertise & flexibility!
