It was wonderful reading each of your thoughts on the value of music therapy. This is wonderful to save a copy of and remind yourself of the unique and valuable background you have to support families.

Hi Jasmine- Thank you for pointing out how these developmental levels can be seen at other ages besides early childhood. I believe Elizabeth is working to develop information about how we see levels in other age groups.

Hi Alyssa- thank you for sharing how you evaluate your own judgements. I think it is really important we all actively evaluate our own implicit biases to work towards culturally responsive practices and maintain cultural humility.

Hi Jasmine- I really appreciated the work you do to research the music and cultural heritage as a part of learning and incorporating the music in your work. I think this is an important consideration for all of us as we use any kind of music. The more background information and connection we have to the music brought into the music session the more meaningful it will be for everyone.

Such an important reminder Alyssa! Something we all need to consider is development is not linear in all areas for all children. Some children move along at a steady pace, some may be slower, and some may be ahead. A great example is twice-exceptional children, (2E), who have asynchronous development and show significant high levels, beyond the “norm” of their age, while also having areas of their development behind the “norm” of their age.

How wonderful that you are getting to see these stages of development in your little one and all the wonderful moments you are having with them!

It is wonderful to hear what you each are taking away from the training this week!

Remember to come back and read/respond to your fellow participant’s posts. We find this aids in deepening the course material.

    Hi Kelsi,

Congratulations! I was pregnant with my daughter when I took this course. I began offering Sprouting Melodies Classes shortly after having her. It really was wonderful to do the music with her and use what I learned from this training to view her development.

Hello everyone. My name is Erika Svolos. I am the online moderator for this training. I live in New Jersey with my husband, my almost 7-year-old daughter, and our cat Moose. It is a joy to be a part of this fantastic program and to join in your Sprouting Melodies journey. I am a graduate of Marywood University, currently, a graduate student at Montclair State University, and have been a music therapist in New Jersey for over 20 years. Over that time, I have worked in a variety of settings including in-patient child/adolescent psychiatry, a private clinic for autism, a large urban public school system, private practice, a private special education high school for individuals with emotional and behavioral disorders, and a private Orthodox Jewish special education school. In August 2013 I started my own business/private practice; Music Therapy Services of New Jersey, LLC. I completed the April 2013 Sprouting Melodies online training and it was a wonderful addition to my practice. I began offering Sprouting Melodies classes in February of 2014 and I’ve truly enjoyed working with my SM families. I have been moderating the Sprouting Melodies Online Training for the past 7 years.
I will be assisting with any questions and/or technical difficulties.
You will be receiving an email with information about the online forum technology and my contact information. If you do not receive the email, please contact me at erika.svolosmtbc@gmail.com.
I am looking forward to getting to know each of you over the next ten weeks!
