@Jenny I am not familiar with their shakers, but I believe there are a lot of restrictions for children with regard to choking hazards. It may be they have to be approved based on certain standards that say not for under 12.
ModeratorHi Shylie, yes, excellent insights….we all have different sensory systems and also there are developmental levels that change stimulation needs.
ModeratorHi AJ, the “Virtual Jam Session” sounds really interesting! Sounds like you are providing some wonderful programming for your community.

ModeratorWonderful insights! Many times it is assumed that if there is already a lot of programming it will be difficult to start a program, but actually it means that families are interested in services and this is a great space to provide something unique. You have a unique skill set that will be greatly needed for families.

ModeratorWonderful insights! Yes, there is always a need for quality programming for young children and with the current climate you will have a unique opportunity to provide something that other childhood programs are not trained to do.

ModeratorHi Maryrose. First, great insights into your community. You are definitely honing in on the great needs that families need. You are also seeing how becoming a parent is quite a journey and in many ways very challenging! As a fellow New Jerseyan, I will also share that our families need a lot of unconditional/non-judgmental support. There are so many mixed messages and judgements thrown at parents (in many cases at the mother). I’ve found my Sprouting Melodies families mentioned, “a lot,” how much they felt safe and cared for in our groups…..and how much they needed that.
To your second point, music therapy is a profession that requires constant advocacy and education. ( I bet the world of doulas may be similar). Over my 20 years, it has been something I’ve had to consistently do no matter where I worked or presented. It is extremely exhausting, even without a pandemic! Also, building a business is a full-time job all on its own, so doing that while also doing clinical work can be challenging. What I’ve found is really important is making sure you are taking good care of yourself first! If you don’t put yourself first, you may find it challenging to be there for others and the constant need for advocacy. From personal experience, without good care of ourselves, we are also at risk for burnout. So, don’t be afraid to say no to opportunities that prevent you from taking care of yourself or are not adding growth to your work.
