Tony, I truly appreciate your cultural reflexivity and humility. The families you work with benefit from that work that you are doing! It is so important for all of us to be doing that in our work and it also helps to break down systemic racism and oppression.
ModeratorThank you all for your responses. I hope this exercise begins to help you think about musical responses throughout the stages.
ModeratorHi Everyone!
The most important expectation here is to learn some of the songs and spend time reflecting on them. As you are learning and playing them see how you can connect them back to what you are learning in the training. Many times we have participants that do not work with children and don’t have access to use them, immediately, with children. So the focus can be more on what you observe and notice about the music and potentials for using it.
ModeratorI always enjoy reading everyone’s responses to this question. It is interesting to hear about music throughout the country and what is happening in specific communities.
@Maryrose Nelson- New Jersey is really a “smorgasbord” of musical traditions. Depending on where you are in the state (County and Town) you will find a variety of musical traditions. New Jersey is a hub for travel and immigration since we are next to NYC. New Jersey also has a high number of families moving from other countries to seek therapeutic services as our schools provide some of the highest amounts of special education services as compared to other states and countries.
ModeratorIt is wonderful to see you all reflexively honoring your skill base, knowledge, and training.
ModeratorI’ve enjoyed reading all of your responses. Thank you to those that are connecting and commenting on other’s posts. Please remember to come back and comment on other’s posts to enhance the course material.
As many of you said, it was helpful to see things laid out on a timeline. The wonderful thing about Elizabeth’s book is that it was written as a reference so you can go back to it regularly.
@Tony wonderful insights about music development is childhood development and what makes music therapy unique! Music is health and has its own continuum that we can track.
