I’m becoming more aware of the benefits of this program and it has contributed towards my knowledge and practice which i will use to conduct sessions in the community.
This will help further my research in MT with children of this age group.

I’ll share this program with fellow MTs to see whether they can promote this program by speaking to their work colleagues.

I am considering to become a Sprouting Melodies provider and really love the songs and creative ideas from the course.
This has given me clarity on how to communicate with parents and work with families.
By reviewing this course I will be able to apply what i learnt.

It is important that the child feels good about himself/herself, recognising what is delightful for the child and encouraging their participation by acknowledging what has been attained in the child’s development through their joy during the session.

Communicating with parents on how to follow up at home through recognition and understanding what has been carried out during the class.

One challenge I found was coming up with a theme with appropriate songs that will cater to the different age groups and how to bring about the kind of focus from them towards the theme.

Music for development relates to a child’s overall well being, it promotes play and parent-child bonding.

Skill building consists of specific and individualistic tasks which are either musical or non-musical.

    Joyful, active, pleasurable, playful, spontaneous

At this age your child loves playful surprises that he/she knows are coming. It is okay for them to leave and come back as long as they are safe. It is important for them to experience the sense of independence while feeling supported. It is so exciting to watch them choose instruments and see how they play and move with them. It is okay for the children to touch and explore my guitar.

    1. Gathering song – Hey!Hey! Come and play!
    2. Bonding song – Hold on Tight
    3. Songs about me – All of This is Me
    4. Instrument song – I Like This Song
    5. Movement song- I Can Move Around
6.Goodbye – Music Time is Over, Thank You Very Much

In view of this I believe it is best that we avoid the 2 extremes of over/under stimulation by striking a balance to see that the child not become overly excited or indifferent to stimuli.

My experience with children is when a child responds to the exposure of stimuli then it affects his/her sleep and feeding habits become inconsistent and unregulated. Moderation of stimulation should be able to strike a balance and calm the child.

Hence we have to create a conducive setting with a certain quality of serenity based on air quality, lighting and exposure to sound levels. Extreme form of stimulation is not good for the child’s wellbeing.

I enjoy calling the children’s names and getting their attention, cuddle them and play with their fingers, at times giving a peck on their cheeks.

    Connecting, pleasure, bonding, calming, warmth.

1.It is so gratifying to see the eye contact that you are making in connecting with your baby.
    2. I noticed that Jewel calmed down after you sang “Good morning” while patting her at the same time.
    3. Look at how Tammy manifested warmth as she swiped gently the wind chimes with her arms and hands!
    4. Benny was delighted as he displayed pleasure when he swayed to the music.
    5. Listen to how Joy is bonding with you by vocalising and smiling when you sing to her!

    Plan
Greeting: Good Morning – Cradle baby in arms and pat them gently with a steady beat
Bonding song: Wiggly Jiggly Car – bounce gently, holding baby on lap or on legs at 45 degree angle
Songs About Me: Just Like Me – Baby faces caregiver
Instrument songs: In My Little hand – Caregiver assists baby to hold maraca and explore movement
Movement song: As Big As Can Be- Place baby on lap, swaying gently from side to side
Goodbye – play toy piano- Sit baby on lap, take a few deep breaths

What is of utmost importance to me as a music therapist working in a community based setting is promoting healthy development by sharing and supporting parents. In light of this setting the bonding between parents and children is crucial as the strength is based on rapport. Bear in mind that the music therapist’s primary goal is to bring about the feeling of well being for these individuals within the community. We all may have our views based on our perspective when we conduct our sessions in the community. But the fact still remains in what we do in making a connection for parent and child bonding.

Erika, thanks for highlighting the aspect of supporting families experiencing stress and the importance of giving parents tools that they can use at home.
I would share relevant audio or video recordings of my sessions with families to remind them of positive messages and wellbeing experienced during the session which they can follow up at home with.

Sara, i agree with you on the aspect of using developmentally appropriate language. How important it is not to overlook their perception of enable them to fit in the world around them.
