Hi Shannon! I think that is great that you imitated the boys movement to really validate what he was doing! I feel like that will also help him cross over to the control stage because you are helping him learn he can influence his environment.

He’s 9 months old, so he is sitting independently, rolling over and army crawling all over the house (he’s quick!). I have just started working with him and I feel like he is just starting to move from awareness to trust. He is aware of the instruments and guitar, and watches my face intently when I sing, especially for “Happy and you know it”! I have been doing bonding songs with him, holding him on my lap and bouncing him up and down. He is beginning to trust that he will not fall and that I am there to support him, but he still sometimes gets a little mad at me when I sway him back and forth to engage those trunk muscles so he has to catch himself. I think after about a month working with him though we will be solidly in the trust stage!
ParticipantI like how you address bringing the parents and children together Madeleine! I think that’s so important that parents feel comfortable and take an active role in the group. They should have fun too!
ParticipantI feel as though taking this course will really help me see my music session through the child’s eyes. If a child is having a hard time, I will really take the time to see it from their perspective and guide parents to do the same. I want parents to really feel comfortable in my groups and if the child becomes upset help the child get through it within the group setting.

ParticipantI also agree that it is very important to have the confidence to reassure parents when they have concerns about their development!

ParticipantThe most important take-away is to remind myself of all the things a typical child should be doing at each age. Sometimes my idea of what young children should be doing gets skewed because I work in Early Intervention, so I work with children who have delays of some sort. I know when each child should be meeting their milestones but it was very good to review the information, it was also very helpful to learn about 4-5 year olds since I primarily work with children under the age of 3.
ParticipantHi Maureen, I agree it is very difficult with your supervisor doesn’t understand what you really do and thinks you are just entertainment. I am so glad you kept with it and I look forward to getting to know you through this course!
ParticipantHello Madeleine! I am also looking forward to really getting the parents involved in my music group and facilitating them bonding with their children through music. I am always happy to see the parents go from standing on the sidelines to actively participating, but I know I can do even more to have them participate and I am hoping this course will help me with that.
ParticipantHello Everyone!
I was on vacation at the start of this course so I am playing catch up! My name is Jennifer Chute and I have a bachelors in Music Performance and Psychology from Elizabethtown College in PA, and a Masters in Music Therapy from SUNY New Paltz in NY. I have been working in Early Intervention for almost 4 years now in Worcester, MA and I have recently joined the Roman Music Therapy family!
I work primarily with children birth to 3, and I am always looking for new ideas and songs for such a unique age group, so I am really looking forward to taking this course. I am always trying to find new ways to combine music and play in my individual sessions, and sometimes get stuck trying to find new ways to work on development in my early intervention music groups. I am hoping this course not only gives me new songs, but also a new perspective on how to make my own!
