During my music therapy groups, I remind the parents that there is no “right or wrong.” The groups are about allowing children to explore and meet other children and develop through music. I feel that as a music therapist for sprouting melodies, I will allow children to explore and play in a free manor that allows them to explore in the way that they do during each stage of development. The information I learned this week will better inform me as a therapist and solidify the typical milestones and allow for multiple interventions to help facilitate those milestones. I also highly encourage parents to learn the songs during group and to take them home to continue with their children! It’s most important that they bond with their child on a regular basis and incorporate these interventions at home.

My biggest takeaway from this week is that it is imperative to look at the world from a child’s’ point of view. I know that in the past, I have seen children getting excited at the tiniest of things that typical adults would not blink an eye at. It is important as adults but more importantly as a provider for children, not to squash the bright light and joy that each child brings to the world. Enjoy the little things and embrace the “child like” behavior!

Hello Everyone. My name is Jordyn Shaffer. I am a music therapist in Frederick Maryland and I work for a music therapy private practice called Noteable Progressions. I’ve been working as a professional for about ten months. My boss Darcy provides Sprouting Melodies courses throughout our community and wanted her employees to be able to provide these courses as well. I have experience working with children in the hospital setting, in private practice, and in groups. I am hoping to really expand my repertoire for this age group as well as learn even more about the development of children at this age.
