I have a 13 month old and he enjoyed the seat belt song a lot! I’ve noticed prior to this that I naturally do a lot of sedative/play songs with him. I give him a big hug and sing slow and then we bounce and sing fast. It keeps him engaged for much longer than either type of song on their own.

I have only been in my current location for a year but prior to that, I was in rural Indiana for many years. Country music and Christian rock were very prevalent. I hadn’t had much experience with either prior to moving there but quickly learned those were most of my clients favorites and became well acquainted throughout my years there.

I’ve never worked with anyone below the age of 8 in my sessions but I have worked with people that developmentally were in some of these stages. I had one girl that had many diagnosis and was very low functioning. At first, sessions seemed difficult because she really couldn’t do much. She was definitely in the awareness stage and sat motionlessly in her wheelchair. After a few weeks of playing the same songs, she started looking at me and smiling when certain songs were played. I started playing them over and over and she would smile and give me eye contact. It became clear after a few weeks of this what her preferences were even though she could not indicate verbally or gesturally.

I agree Shelley! It seems like parents of children even at a very young age (i’m guilty of this too) really try to pound the concepts of “share” and “sorry” all the time but the child may not actually understand at all what that concept means.

I think the biggest thing that really stuck with me was how to respond to children using simple answers instead of long complicated ones that they won’t understand. I have a 13 month old and am in a lot of neighborhood playdates with kids many different ages. I see some parents giving really long answers to some kids and maybe I will pass along the info!

Hello! My name is Laura and I’ve been a music therapist for 8 years. I have a one year old son which is part of what really drew me to this training. I worked most my career in Indiana under Waiver services and my youngest client was 7. I don’t have a lot of experience professionally working with younger children and now that I’m in Ohio, I will have more opportunities with my current position to do so.
