For me, I think that the things I will bring into sessions would be my imagination and patience. I love to be in the moment with clients, reacting to what they’re doing and playing, and helping empower them to feel heard and successful. I had a back to back practicum working with children with special needs in a school setting, and once I realized that I could just be myself and approach the children with curiosity and openness, it really helped the rapport and their engagement. I’m also very patient. I’m not sure why exactly, but my wife says that she would never have been as patient had she not been around me. I think its something natural to me, but I also work on it a lot as self-care, through mindfulness, and thinking carefully about why others act the way they do, and that brings in a lot of clarity and peace and slows automatic reactions that I might have had. Parents are so stressed, kids can be so stressed, and its always my goal to be a person of peace in the room.

    Hi Melissa,

I am excited to be a part of the team and work with kids! And thank you for setting me up with this training, already there is so much I’m learning and I think it will really set me up to have a lot more clarity and direction when working with children and families!

    Hi Emma,

Yes it is me that you briefly met at Park Nicollet! I just finished my internship there! I think that you are right that you don’t need a child of your own to be able to be effective working with children and families. Being a Dad has been an awesome learning experience, but it really only equipped me to understand my son, not really any other unique kid and their families. The information you provide would probably even come off as more reliable, and not just more advice from other parents based on their experiences.

My most valuable takeaway is that a key part of working with children and families is the need to have a knowledge base to help parent’s better understand and accept their children’s behavior and various developmental milestones. There is too much conflicting information from family, friends, and the internet for most parents to ever feel totally comfortable that their kids are where they are supposed to be and if they are being competent parents. Its brutal. So the more we can help bring clarity, acceptance, guidance, and creativity into those family dynamics, that will spill over and help in other aspects of family functioning as well.

    Hello there,

I’m Stephen Sullivan and I am just entering the professional music therapy world! I’ll be working at Living Spirit Music Therapy LLC here in the twin cities area in Minnesota. I live in North Saint Paul with my wife and five year old son. I’m a masters equivalency student at Augsburg University in Minneapolis and am very close to being done! I am excited for this training. I have really enjoyed working with children with special needs in the past, and am interested in learning more about bringing music therapy into the community for children and their families. I’m excited to learn from you all and this will be great information to have.
