Trust does not arrive all at once.

I’ve learned this most clearly through years of leading Sprouting Melodies classes with young children and their families, and through my work in early intervention. In those settings, trust develops slowly, through experience, over time, and in relationship. Children come to understand the world through how they are met. Through consistency. Through responsiveness. Through moments of shared attention and presence.

In my work, I’ve learned that trust is not something we teach directly. It’s something we create the conditions for.
When music is offered with intention, it can become a powerful context for building trust. Through repeated musical experiences, children begin to predict what will happen next, to participate more fully, and eventually to play. Over time, they come to trust the music, the adult offering it, and themselves within the experience.

These moments are not about performance or novelty. They are about attunement. About staying long enough for safety to form and for connection to deepen.

Trust matters far beyond childhood. It is foundational to learning, communication, and well-being across the lifespan.When individuals trust themselves, trust others, and trust the world around them, they are better able to engage, grow, and adapt.

Research continues to affirm what many of us observe in practice: early experiences and caring relationships with adults have a lasting impact on health and wellbeing across the lifespan. When children experience consistent, responsive care, they are better supported in developing a sense of safety, agency, and connection that carries forward into learning, relationships, and emotional health.
