5 words to describe the music experiences in Sprouting Melodies 1 is gentle, nurturing, soothing, exploratory, and calm.

When speaking with parents about the musical responses of children in SM1:
Infants in this level of Sprouting Melodies are just beginning to interact with their environments! Music responses in this class would include simple things such as turning to the music, smiling, and starting to even coo with music. As they get older and more used to the Sprouting Melody environment, reactions and responses will be more noticeable. Music in this Sprouting Melodies class is really about musical interactions that we can set up to help you begin a musical bond with your child.

      Plan:
Gathering Song/ Hello- (I’ve got one that’s called Everybody’s Here and It’s Time to Sing Hello that might work for this class with adaptations!)
Bonding Song w/Movement- Wiggly Jiggly Car
Instrument Play- I Like This Song
      Transition Song-Tickle
Songs About Me/Singing- Just Like Me
      Cooldown Movement- Scarves
      Goodbye

5 Words: Joy, gentle, touch, cuddling, bonding

5 Sentences: Infants ages 0-9 months are able to make choices in music by turning away or turning towards music. Infants are also able to make choices through independent instrument exploration. Music experiences in the group are dynamic, working to stimulate a child’s focus outwards to excite or to focus inward to calm. Infants may vocalize in response to singing. Classes with infants of this age are focused on building the bond between caregiver and child.

      Plan:
Instrument Exploration – Embedded Songs: A Car on My Knee
Hello/Gathering Song – Transition Songs: Good Morning
Body Percussion – Gathering Songs: Sit Down With Me
Lap Ride/Tickles – Bonding Songs: Wiggly Jiggly Car
Instrument Play – Instrument Songs: I Like This Song
Gross Motor Movement – Movement Songs: Will You Come
Cool Down – Songs About Me: Just Like Me
      Goodbye – Transition Songs: Goodbye

5 Words – Flexible, gentle, enjoyable, bonding, supportive
5 Sentences – I’m seeing some really strong engagement and awareness from your little one right now, based on their head being turned to the sound of my instrument and their continued eye gaze. You may see some other reactions from your child to the music like turning their head away if it’s too much or if they don’t like that particular sound, moving their body, or making various facial expressions. Your infant may even making some vocalizations in response to your singing; it’s exciting and they want to join in! Please keep singing with us; your child will respond most to your voice because yours is the most familiar and the one they will keep listening to after our time here is done. The most important thing to come away from this experience is not being able to play a specific instrument but to have tools to keep building that bond between you and your child.
Plan: Gathering song/Hello, Instrument Exploration, Instrument play: In My Little Hand, Bonding: Row It Faster, Movement: Pick Your Hands Up High, Cool Down: Are You Sleeping? w/Scarves, Goodbye

I like that you called it a “cool down.” It seems like a great space to leave the session.

Create a plan for songs and music experiences to use in a Sprouting Melodies 1 session
      1. Gathering song: I wrote a song a long time ago where the tempo can easily be adapted, so I would use my own song, slow it down, and use lullaby-like accompaniment on the guitar.
      2. Bonding Song: I Love Your Toes (link to YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBbTBrik-p4) I found this video online and thought it was a great song written by another early childhood specialist. The lyrics are, “I love your ___ (toes, knees, etc) so I’ll give them a little squeeze.”
      3. Instrument exploration: Shaking Song- this is another song I wrote a while ago. Encourage parents to use some hand over hand assistance.
      4. Movement: Row Row Row Your Boat
      5. Closing: Time to Say Goodbye/You are my Sunshine- I wrote things closing song and it chains well with You are My Sunshine. It also has space to say goodbye using each child’s name depending on the size of the group.
