As a music therapist, you know how music making contributes to overall early development. This connection between music and development is a unique feature of this training. We also know that there are many community programs in which young children are taught music skills.

How do you explain to parents the difference between what you do and what another music learning based program does?

I would try to explain that, while any music class is great, the Sprouting Melodies curriculum has been created specifically with developmental milestones and musical development in mind. The musical experiences are curated to reflect and promote healthy development through a number of domains, including motor, social, and emotional.

Along those same lines, music learning based programs more teach and work on music skills. The goal of Sprouting Melodies is to promote developmental growth and is led by a music therapist who has this wealth of knowledge about how this development works.

I would share that music learned based programs focus on encouraging connection with parents and teaching the basics of music, eg. rhythm, tempo, dynamics, etc. Music therapy and Sprouting Melodies also encourage parent/child bonding but also focuses on using musical experiences to reinforce the developmental stages and milestones of the young children.

I would say that the biggest thing to note is that SM is tailored to YOUR child. We understand musical development is development and what a variety of ways these factors can present. We are in the moment with your child and the whole group, understanding that flexibility and letting your child be themselves is key. There is also a key music therapy lens that instructors are equipped with. The goal is more flexible and the expectations are tailored.
