in reply to: Share some of your experiences with children of this age and level.
ParticipantI’m so encouraged by those of you who haven’t worked with kids of this age and are taking this course. It really speaks to your desire to grow and continue to learn!

in reply to: Share your thoughts with the board members on the role of music therapy in community based settings.
ParticipantCarrie,
I agree 100% and think the more we can communicate that to families and colleagues outside of our field the more we can help legitimize our work.June 8, 2019 at 9:16 pm
in reply to: What value do music therapists bring to families of young children?
ParticipantShannon, I also like what you said about us getting the most out of each musical experience. Sometimes I think MTs forget that we don’t *own* music. Especially when working with children who are making music all the time. We (hopefully) are not the only way these children interact with music, but we can make the most out of how they interact with music.

I agree. I’ve loved reading each person’s thoughts and how we all bring so many different things to the table. I then think about all the different ways in which our clients can bring different aspects to each of these four music experiences. How can we learn from them too?June 8, 2019 at 9:11 pm

in reply to: Sing and learn some of the songs presented in the video. Share with the board your experiences using these songs.
ParticipantBrooke,
I also find this to be tricky at times! Keep practicing- it gets easier!June 8, 2019 at 9:07 pm
in reply to: Discuss with the board the traditional and cultural music in your home community.
ParticipantAmadee,
Yes I love how music tears down so many walls between cultures and has potential to bring us closer together.
Thanks for your encouragement.ParticipantI’m both grateful and discouraged to hear that so many wish they had more childhood development classes in college. I’m glad we can all learn so much from this course.
ParticipantTabatha,
Don’t give up. Keep trying to get involved. You could mention how beneficial music therapy is to increase positive patient experiences. You could also pull all of the other children’s hospitals in the country and show them how they need music therapy in order to keep being cutting edge. 🙂ParticipantBrooke and Stephanie, I am excited to learn how your work at children’s hospitals have led you to this course and what each of us will take from it.
ParticipantTabatha! Yes! Do it! So great that we have both found ways to connect parents to their children.
ParticipantThis training will (and already has) definitely impact how I interact with my at-risk preschoolers that I work with twice and week and the children I work with at the hospital I work at.
I have an energized perspective on early childhood music therapy and I am grateful for that. I will continue to share insights that I’ve learned with my colleagues (both fellow music therapists and non-music therapists coworkers). I am constantly looking for language on how to prove that what I’m doing is evidenced based and has purpose and training behind it. I’m grateful I have gained that during this course.June 8, 2019 at 8:41 pm
in reply to: How are you planning on sharing this information with colleagues, administrators and families?
ParticipantStephanie, thanks for sharing such a wonderful list of all of the groups that you are involved in. This helps me think of all of the groups I’m not involved in and would like to be.

in reply to: How are you planning on sharing this information with colleagues, administrators and families?
ParticipantThe private practice I work for has monthly meetings and I plan on sharing this information in a formal setting with them this summer. We have about 7 music therapists/employees that attend these meetings and they are a wonderful group.
I like what Meredith said about all of the different kinds of groups to get involved in and not being a musical entertainer. I definitely always show how I’m a therapist and not an entertainer. I would love to provide SM classes for teen moms and their children in the future.ParticipantShannon, I think music tears down a lot of barriers in many situations. Best of luck to you as you bring music into your community and get more connected that way. I believe your community will be stronger because of it.
