Michelle, right now my groups max out at 12 and the minimum is three. We sometimes run classes with two in the hopes that more will join late! The larger groups can become challenging to manage especially when you have adults in the room too, but we’ve found 12 to be successful.
ParticipantI’m so excited and am looking forward to having such wonderful new Sprouting Melodies Providers. If any of you are ever in the Boston area, call us up at Roman Music Therapy Services and come sit in on a SM class!
ParticipantGreat job answering this question. For those of you who said you don’t have much experience working with children in multi-aged groups, I think you did a great job using your clinical judgement on how you would balance the group. Nice work! It’s always hard to feel the expert when you don’t have much experience, just like when you are informing parents, but you are not a parent yourself. It’s definitely important to remember that you are an educated professional, and you have the skills necessary to be the expert!

ParticipantDon’t forget to comment with your session plans! Try to use specific song titles either from the video or from personal use so that you have these session plans ready to refer back to when you facilitate your own SM groups!

ParticipantI’m glad you are excited Kayla! Articulating what the parent and child are getting from the music at such a young age is so important because some parents may think their child is too young for the class and want to wait until they can participate more independently.

in reply to: What value do music therapists bring to families of young children?
ParticipantKayla, I loved your statement, “We are so important!” It’s imperative we know and understand this to be true so we have the confidence and language to communicate our value to families and other professionals.
ParticipantIt is great to read about all of the excitement around educating parents! The caregivers will be just as excited to learn what you have to offer!
