Kayla, what a wonderful opportunity! Which developmental stage do you think he was in at that point when you met him for the first time?

There are so many great things to take away from this weeks content! It was fun reading about all of your ideas Katie! I think a mirror song would be so much fun!

    Jaycie,
As Sprouting Melodies Providers we are expected to provide parents with resources, support and information about their child’s development. As this is not clinical music therapy, it can be a hard topic to bring up. Parents really look to us as the expert, and value our suggestions. It is just as important to educate parents about the red flags as it is the benefits and progress you are observing in the groups, and parents are often grateful for the advice. We always try and bring up the subject in a gentle way and as privately as possible, so be sure to take the parent aside after class. You want to make it more of a conversation by asking them, “I noticed Charlie was walking on his toes, does he do that often?” The parent may bring up their concerns as well. You want to educate them and let them know that those things you have observed could mean something more is going on. We can give them resources and contact for EI assessment. We don’t want to push the parent, but it is our responsibility to say something if you see something concerning. As early childhood providers we can help parents get their children the services they need before it is too late to receive services.

My name is Kristina Barbo and I am one of the online moderators for this course. I live in Reading MA. I graduated from Anna Maria College, and I currently work at Roman Music Therapy Services(RMTS) with Meredith Pizzi as a music therapist, Sprouting Melodies Provider, and practicum student supervisor. I work with a diverse clientele from birth to end of life in various populations. I have been a Sprouting Melodies Provider for two and a half years. I participated in the live training in NY with Beth and Meredith in June of 2012, and completed the online training in November of 2012 after I became a board certified music therapist. My online training experience was unique as I had already started to lead SM groups of my own, which was very helpful as a refresher, and gave me the opportunity to absorb the information in a more applicable way. I will be present during this entire online training course to be a resource for you throughout your experience. I am here to respond to any questions you may have and offer my support as best I can, so please feel free to contact me here on the forum! You can also contact me by email with any specific questions you may have at kristina@romanmusictherapy.com. I look forward to getting to know all of you over the next several weeks!

Lauren, you asked if anyone had experience with Sprouting Melodies in daycare settings. One of my co-workers at Roman Music Therapy Services is a SM provider and ran a Family Sprouts group at a day care. She told me that it went very well. It would be a great idea to get into day cares, and is very beneficial for kids who need bonding time with adults in their care even if it is not their parent. We have kids come to class with nannys and grand parents, and that bond is just as important for caregivers who are not the parent. If you need more information let me know and I will connect you with Laura, my co-worker and our Office Manager, Leslie. My email is Kristina@romanmusictherapy.com.

I’m so excited to hear so many of you now have the confidence and drive to really jump into becoming a provider. It is definitely a great idea to go through everything you an again to reinforce all of the information and songs. I found it helpful going through everything even after I started my first classes again just to sharpen everything!

Robyn, I’m glad you talked about remembering everybody’s names! What helps me is we have a class roster that we have printed for attendance, so I always have that as a backup if needed. Also, the first few classes I like to give everyone stick on name tags including the adults. This gives the adults the opportunity to learn other caregiver names. That way they are more likely to make connections. Also, I write down the name of the caregiver on my roster so I can remember the next week. The name tags can be weened off after a couple of weeks. Also, if you have babies or toddlers that are distracted by them or peel them off, put them on their back!

In my classes, I use a lot small percussion instruments. I have used maracas, a variety of different sized frame drums (Remo), bongos(remo), claves, rainsticks, jingle bells, triangles, castanets, guiros, lollipop drums, tambourines, floor toms (remo), cabasas, etc. I usually put out what is developmentally appropriate for each class. I also like to use mallets with a heavy rubber head so that it is durable when chewed on.

It’s so great that we have the skill set to be able to regulate a room full of children. Be sure if you are running a Sprouting Melodies group and you observe over stimulation, tell the adults what you noticed and why you responded the way you did musically. Otherwise they may not know!

Wow! What great reflections! I can feel your passion and excitement. I encourage you to print your answers to all of the questions, this one in particular. Your answers are so inspiring especially when you are just diving into your first Sprouting Melodies groups and need a reminder for why we do what we do!
