I am really enjoying reading all of your reflections! It’s definitely helpful to have examples of clients or children in your life that you can apply this knowledge to.

Laetitia and Kristen, In my Sprouting Melodies classes I usually verbally encourage parents and caregivers to sing along at the start of a session. I also use phrases like, “these songs are very simple and very repetitive because that’s how children learn and trust in the music. This song only has two words in it, hello and everybody so sing it with me so you can remember it when you make music at home!” If you can get everyone singing during that hello song, it will help warm them up for further prompts throughout the session to sing along!

Another thing I like to say is, “your baby is looking at me because I’m singing. They want to hear your voice because that’s what’s most familiar to them. If you sing along, they will be looking at you and it will increase that special bonding time you are having together in music.”

I also have seen and hear about these differences in dynamics in the classroom versus at home with caregivers. It is so true that children are more comfortable exerting their independence in a safe environment such as home. I always tell my families to sing in class so they can then remember the songs and sing them at home. I also tell them that their children may respond differently to the music at home and start to participate more in class if they can practice more where they are comfortable! Not only is it great for their practice and trust of the music, but it’s a great tool for parents to use outside of class to promote positive behavior during those challenging times!

Hi Everyone! My name is Kristina Rio (formerly Kristina Barbo) and I am one of the online moderators for this course. I live in Reading MA. I graduated from Anna Maria College, and I currently work at Roman Music Therapy Services(RMTS) with Meredith Pizzi as a music therapist, Sprouting Melodies Coordinator, Sprouting Melodies Provider, and practicum/internship supervisor. I work with a diverse clientele from birth to end of life in various populations. I have been a Sprouting Melodies Provider for three and a half years. I participated in the live training in NY with Beth and Meredith in June of 2012, and completed the online training in November of 2012 after I became a board certified music therapist. My online training experience was unique as I had already started to lead SM groups of my own, which was very helpful as a refresher, and gave me the opportunity to absorb the information in a more applicable way. I will be present during this entire online training course to be a resource for you throughout your experience. I am here to respond to any questions you may have and offer my support as best I can, so please feel free to contact me here on the forum! You can also contact me by email with any specific questions you may have at kristina@romanmusictherapy.com. I look forward to getting to know all of you over the next several weeks!

Wonderful reflections everyone! This question is so great for realizing the value we bring to music groups for young children. Not everyone knows how to read a room’s energy and attention and adapt to what’s happening!

Lauren, If you do fulfill your dream of writing children’s songs, be sure to share on the provider’s forum so we can learn from you as well!

I use “It’s time to clean up the instruments (or shakers) and put them all away.” Repetition is key! Once the children can trust that something else that’s predictable is coming, they will be more ready to clean up independently. I also use Erika’s technique of letting the child hold on to the instrument a little longer until they drop it independently. Other times, it’s great to model for parents a technique to help with the physical aspect of letting an object go. If you firmly rub the top of their hand it stimulates the release of their grasp. Opposite that is if you tickle their palm with an instrument or your finger, the response if for them to grasp. If you are moving into something with another object for the kids to hold, it can be helpful to do a trade such as a scarf for a maraca. I also keep the instruments on a high shelf mostly out of sight, so once they are cleaned up they are not visible or reachable! Hope this helps!

Dina, I’m glad you are able to test these songs out with your granddaughter’s daycare group! It’s so great that you have the opportunity to practice with a group of little ones!

I enjoyed reading everyone’s experiences with this age group. Several of my friends have just had babies, and they are so much fun! Thanks for sharing!
