My professor in college always used to tell us to make sure we knew what each child’s “chocolate eclair” instrument was in our groups. A “chocolate eclair” instrument is the child’s most favorite instrument that is the most motivating for them to play. We would keep those nearby and pull them out and use them at very strategic points during the session.
ParticipantI agree- I feel way more equipped to communicate goals and developmental thoughts to parents from taking this course and I can’t wait to bring that into some of the community work that I’m doing!
ParticipantThat’s a great point about goals! Maybe we could also take some time to ask the parents in our groups what kind of goals they have for their children and incorporate that into the content of the sessions.
ParticipantI love that you used the word ME! Great point that so much of the session can be structured about getting to know oneself and communicating that to others at this age/stage.
ParticipantAgree- and what works in a session one week, may not be where the group is at the following!
ParticipantI like that you called it a “cool down.” It seems like a great space to leave the session.
ParticipantAnd schools so often have a trajectory of what they teach at each age/grade, it’s nice to offer community based services that don’t have to follow as rigid of a plan and can be more catered to each child based on their strengths, needs, and interests.

ParticipantThe pandemic had such a big influence on early childhood development. I think it just makes the work we do as music therapists with this population so meaningful!
ParticipantCompletely agree! And families are also part of the care that we provide as music therapists!

in reply to: How have you used these four music experiences in your practice?
ParticipantI like what you wrote about singing. This course has challenged me that not every experience needs to be accompanied by a guitar or a keyboard!
ParticipantI can imagine the xylophone is also a great instrument to use when learning the piano, since the key structure is similar from instrument to instrument!
ParticipantI just recently learned about Music for Kiddos and I am a big fan! What songs are your favorite?
