KeymasterI agree with Erin, that we need to balance the expectations of the parents with the experiences of the children. What I have found is that many of the grownups look to us for information, education and mostly communication.

in reply to: Share your thoughts with the board members on the role of music therapy in community based settings.
KeymasterThank you to all for your deep and insightful thoughts about music therapy and community based work. As you all noted, it is a conversation that we as music therapists need to have. So many things have changed in the treatment (and treatment) of people with disabilities and I think that this change have made it more difficult to think in the past vision of “I am the therapist and you are the client” type of practice.
October 22, 2013 at 8:59 pmKeymasterJust a thought, participants in past courses have found it helpful to keep copies of their forum responses so when you are ready to provide groups you can pull out a copy of your ideas and you are good to go!
Stacy, the Sprouting Melodies sessions are generally 45 minutes.October 19, 2013 at 4:34 pmKeymasterHere is a take home you can share with your families now. I just posted a very short video on http://www.SproutinMelodies.com sharing some thoughts and songs about very young children and the Halloween holiday. Check it out and then share with your families.
October 19, 2013 at 4:24 pmKeymasterIt is so great to see the music therapy passion in everyone’s posts. We certainly agree that Sprouting Melodies offers a unique experience for children and families. Meredith and I were recently invited to explain the differences in a side by side comparison with the Music Together and Sing and Grow programs in the early childhood music therapy on-line magazine imagine. You can find the articles at http://imagine.musictherapy.biz/Imagine/imagine.magazine.html. We would love to hear more of your feedback.
October 8, 2013 at 9:30 pmKeymasterThanks, Jen. I have had many music therapists say that they use the framework to understand development throughout all ages and areas of practice.

KeymasterThanks for posting this, Stacy. It is really fun for me to hear how the songs change to meet the needs in the moment!
October 1, 2013 at 9:13 pmKeymasterThanks for this story, Erin. Development is dynamic. Our goals center on providing opportunities in which movement from one level to the next can happen. Sometimes, though, the disability is too great for vertical movement. Then we look to expand the level horizontally by providing as many experiences in as many different ways within that level as we can.
