Thanks for your contributions, everyone! I wanted to add that for all of you who are looking to develop programs as part of your business plan, there is so much potential! We have celebrated a record breaking year with 75-82 children enrolled in our Sprouting Melodies classes for the last three sessions! It has helped ground our team of therapists in typical development, provide ongoing group services that are prepaid, and built our connections with a wide group of community members who may not have otherwise learned about music therapy. I encourage all of you to think about becoming Sprouting Melodies Providers as you go through this course. There are lot of resources available to you and you do not have to do it all on your own! That being said, we can’t build your practice for you! You have to have the confidence as others have noted in this thread, and you have to commit to giving your program the time, space and attention it will need to develop and grow. But just like young children, Sprouting Melodies has a way of growing and with your energy, attention and effort, you can create a thriving early childhood program in your community!

    Hi Everyone,
It is great to see all of you jumping into the course! Beth and I have envisioned the potential for Raising Harmony for many, many years in our work as music therapists. We believe that bringing music therapists together to provide community and support is essential for all of us to be successful in our work. Please use this forum as a way to connect with each other, and feel free to reach out at any time to me or Beth. Erika is also a tremendous resource if you have any questions about the technology or assignments. I do check in and read posts as I can, but I am most accessible via email. If you want to reach out at any time, please email me at meredith@raisingharmony.com.
I look forward to seeing you all through this journey, and hopefully working with you as Sprouting Melodies Providers in the future!

Hi Everyone, I’m thrilled to welcome all of you to this online course! I am Meredith Pizzi, proud to be a Board Certified Music Therapist and excited to see the course launch in a new format after months of planning, research, design and development!

Here we are about to embark on a 10 week journey together and I look forward to hearing about your growth throughout the course.

I am a graduate of Duquesne University’s Music Therapy Program and I had the joy and honor of working with Beth Schwartz as my internship supervisor. I learned so much from her in my internship and really developed a love for working in early childhood. After my internship, I had a very successful private practice on Long Island, NY before moving to Boston in 2006. Once settled into Boston, I founded Roman Music Therapy Services, and in 2009 Sprouting Melodies was born! Since 2009, we have seen our programming and revenues at Roman Music Therapy Services skyrocket, and a lot of that has to do with the growth of Sprouting Melodies and how well it has been received in our community.

What brings me here is the desire to share with others what I have learned about early childhood and music making. I have found it to be a wonderful part of our practice, a fantastic early childhood integrated experience, and as one of the music therapists on my staff says, Sprouting Melodies is great for burnout prevention!

I look forward to hearing about what brings you to this journey!

    So what brings you here??

    Hi Julia and Nicole,
I’m happy to answer your questions. If you can be on the call in a little bit we can discuss it further. To answer here quickly, the $100 membership fee is due upon signing on to become a provider. Following that, the $100 is due annually. However, the annual membership fee is waived if you have paid in at least $100 in royalties over the course of the year. So for providers who want to stay connected to the community, but aren’t running programs, and therefore paying in quarterly royalty payments, they would need to continue to pay $100 annually.
Liability insurance is something that you absolutely should have in private practice and is recommended for all music therapists in practice. We just need proof of your insurance, it doesn’t cost you anything additional because you are a Sprouting Melodies Provider.
And yes, the royalty payments only apply to your Sprouting Melodies revenue, not the entire portion of your business revenue. Let’s set up a time to talk more about the details!

Katy, it was great to meet you here at MAR!!! It was also great for me to meet Erika face to face for the first time! We’ve known each other through this forum and over the phone and email for a couple of years now, but it was great to meet in person!

I look forward to meeting some of the other course participants at the NER Conference in April! And hopefully we will get to see many of you in Ohio this fall for the National Conference!

    Thanks for the post, Katy!

Ladies, Can you think of specific songs that you would sing? Rather than just categories, come up with a specific song title. It will make it easier for you to come back to it later! Post again with your answers so we can all see each other’s song choices. 🙂 Keep up the great work!

I love all of your comments about working with little, little ones. It is such a unique experience and I really do love it! Great self-awareness about both tone of voice and facial affect. Remember with this age group both facial affect and vocal volume and timbre can be too much. You will learn to read their cues very quickly and you will probably over-react at some point and when the baby turns away or start to cry you will know why right away. That’s how we all learn!
I agree with Kristina about the stuff and being able to take care of their baby’s needs. It’s never a bad time to let parents know, and they don’t expect a before class “meeting.” They sign up and come ready to engage that first day. When they are walking in, I will often say to them, “The most important thing is for you and your baby to be comfortable, so if you need to feed or change him or her, that’s fine. If you need to stand up, that’s fine.” I just try to make them feel very comfortable from the very beginning.

Hi Everybody! I’m thrilled to be on this online course with all of you! I am Meredith Pizzi, proud to be a Board Certified Music Therapist and excited to see so many other wonderful music therapists interested in learning about early childhood music therapy and Sprouting Melodies. Here we are about to embark on a 10 week journey together and I know we are all going to learn a lot!

I am a graduate of Duquesne University’s Music Therapy Program and I had the joy and honor of working with Beth Schwartz as my internship supervisor. After my internship, I had a very successful private practice on Long Island, NY before moving to Boston in 2006. Once settled into Boston, I founded Roman Music Therapy Services, and in 2009 Sprouting Melodies was born! Since 2009, we have seen our revenues at Roman Music Therapy Services skyrocket, more than tripling in 3 years and a lot of that has to do with the growth of Sprouting Melodies and how well it has been received in our community. What brings me here is the desire to share with others what I have learned about early childhood and music making. And with all of the effort that has gone into growing Sprouting Melodies, I want to give other music therapists the opportunity to now make it part of their practices. I’ve learned so much, and the branding and program development is done! I just want to get it out there to music therapists and families all around the country! So what brings you here??

Great point, Cindy. It’s not all about academic readiness, but overall developmental growth that continually prepares us for the next stage of learning!

Cindy, Next week, please try to post in the topics that are already created. It makes it easier to keep up with everything and comment on each other’s posts. You can read the thread that I start and at the bottom, type your comment in the box. Thanks!

Angie, Do you know you can get credit for this course through Illinois Early Intervention? Please let us know if that would be helpful to you. We are already moving ahead in the process to get the time approved! How convenient is that? 🙂

Cindy, as we travel through the course content, we are going to focus a lot on early childhood development and musical development of all children. I think this information will provide a strong theoretical framework for your outreach to the preschool teachers. We will speak a lot about working with babies and toddler and their parents. Be sure to apply this learning to working with staff members in your school programs as well. They also need the information and education that we can provide. There is a Sprouting Melodies age grouping for preschoolers called Music Makers that we won’t get into during this initial 10 week course – there is just too much to cover! – but we will talk a lot about how music supports the overall development of young children. When we get to Family Sprouts we will talk about how to reach children of different developmental levels in the same group and I’m sure you’ll see how that applies to a lot of the integrated classes you are and will be working with.

Hi Wei! It is great to have you join us all the way from Singapore! I think you’ll find a lot of the course content and conversations will apply to work with kids of all ages, and certainly to your little one at home! Congratulations and looking forward to sharing these 10 weeks together!

And with two of your colleagues at CT Music Therapy already trained, this will be a great way for you to work as a team providing Sprouting Melodies groups. We find that having a team of us providing Sprouting Melodies classes at Roman Music Therapy Services really enriches the experience for all of us!
