in reply to: How have you used these four music experiences in your practice?
ParticipantNatalie, I agree it’s much easier to apply this knowledge when having context and a baseline example. I’m glad you had the opportunity to observe a class. I found that taking the training a second time after I became certified as a music therapist, and had been running Sprouting Melodies groups of my ow,n that I was able to absorb the information on a different level.

in reply to: Discuss with the board the traditional and cultural music in your home community.
ParticipantI second Beth! I loved Michelle’s version of ‘Jingle Bells.’ It’s so great to have this supportive community of music therapists to learn from, so be sure to read back and start some great conversation!

in reply to: What was your most valuable takeaway from this weeks’ content?
ParticipantLinda, that is a great question. I think it is alright to let parents parent in the moment, but to be able to use it as a teachable moment as well. I would mention that it is important to model the behavior of apologizing, but to also stress that the concept of “sorry” is not yet understood at this age so the expectation is not too high.

I like how Melissa talked about the “ah-hah” moments and how they are a blessing to us in our work. It is also our job to share those moments with the families in the moment, because they don’t necessarily see or experience those moments the same way we do. Remember to point out those beautiful moments!
ParticipantWelcome everyone! Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourselves! I’m looking forward to taking this 10 week journey with all of you.
ParticipantMy name is Kristina Barbo and I am one of the online moderators for this course. I live in Reading MA. I graduated from Anna Maria College, and I currently work at Roman Music Therapy Services(RMTS) with Meredith Pizzi as a music therapist, Sprouting Melodies Provider, and practicum student supervisor. I work with a diverse clientele from birth to end of life in various populations. I have been a Sprouting Melodies Provider for two and a half years. I participated in the live training in NY with Beth and Meredith in June of 2012, and completed the online training in November of 2012 after I became a board certified music therapist. My online training experience was unique as I had already started to lead SM groups of my own, which was very helpful as a refresher, and gave me the opportunity to absorb the information in a more applicable way. I will be present during this entire online training course to be a resource for you throughout your experience. I am here to respond to any questions you may have and offer my support as best I can, so please feel free to contact me here on the forum! You can also contact me by email with any specific questions you may have atkristina@romanmusictherapy.com. I look forward to getting to know all of you over the next several weeks!

in reply to: Share how you can explain to parents the difference between music for development and music for skill building.
ParticipantIan just a side note with Sprouting Melodies we are using our unique background which does include music therapy and goal/objectives, but we are not doing clinical music therapy. Instead of goals and objectives, we can explain the purpose of what we are doing and possible responses and outcomes through the music. You can certainly explain your training and background to establish credibility, but just remember it can be tricky distinguishing between music for the purpose of clinical progress, and music for support of healthy development. Does that make sense?

ParticipantHi Ericha. Beth’s book does have the piano accompaniment written out in it. It is a really fun song!

ParticipantRemember to list specific songs whether they be from the video this week, one of your own songs, or from Beth’s songbook! The purpose of this question is for you to have a song framework for a SM2 session ready to go so you can look back at it if you plan to start groups of your own!
