in reply to: How are you planning on sharing this information with colleagues, administrators and families?
KeymasterI agree, Lauren. I find that parents are thirsty for information and support and become our biggest promoters.
KeymasterThanks. Jillian, one thing I have been told by MTs who work in pediatric hospital or hospice work, is that children sometimes digress in the musical levels due to pain, anxiety or medication. I would love to know if you see this response also and if the musical developmental levels hold true in those types of settings.

KeymasterThese ideas are exactly why music therapists make the best providers of early childhood music experiences. Thank you to all!

KeymasterGreat ideas, everyone. I also try and find some time to encourage parent participation, since the more the grownup sings, plays and moves, the more the child usually sings, plays and moves.

KeymasterOne of the things I think about when I compose songs is how to put in something for everyone. One way to do this is to write what I call “Songs about Nothing” where the lyrics are not specific to any particular concept or idea (I Like This Song is one of those.) With very generic lyrics, the song is not tied to a certain age or developmental level.
I also work to promote the leadership skills of the older kids and model for them how to be the ‘helper’ or ‘music leader’.

in reply to: Share your thoughts with the board on how much stimulation is enough? How much stimulation is too much?
KeymasterYes, we are working to build a like minded community in early childhood music that works ‘by the child, not by the book’.

KeymasterGreat question, Michelle. I often have an adult or two who need supported seating, so I have small stools or lower chairs available for them to sit in. I think this is where we, as music therapists. shine. We know the importance of being flexible and adapting to the immediate needs of everyone in the group.

KeymasterOne thing I can never be without is a good quality, good sounding hand drum that I use to set a steady beat. I like ones with a deep, rich sound that is not overwhelming.

KeymasterThanks again for sharing so many new songs with the forum! Margie and Rachel have great resources on their web sites. Erika, could you share the melody of your Up and Down song with us?
Great questions for the week, Emily. Imagine is a terrific resource for current practice. Dr. Kern also shares the full text of a number of her studies on her web site. At the end of a number of the blogs on http://www.RaisingHarmony.com there are research citations. One of the benefits of being a Sprouting Melodies provider is access to a member research site with info and practice suggestions from the newest articles.
